El mes pasado en nuestra querida Panamá, como parte de su educación continua, la Brigada de Respuestas a Emergencia con Materiales Peligrosos del Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos de la República de Panamá (BCBRP) realizó una práctica de derrame de gas cloro que le permitió evaluar la reacción ante este tipo de accidentes.
El gas cloro es una sustancia corrosiva que se utiliza para potabilizar el agua. Su inhalación puede causar lagrimeo, erosión en los dientes, daños en los ojos, en la piel y en el tracto respiratorio, pudiendo provocar incluso edema pulmonar.
El subteniente Cristian Toribio, explicó que el BCBRP tiene un rol especial en el manejo de las emergencias que involucran químicos tóxicos industriales y también la potencial amenaza de un ataque químico.
Agregó que las emergencias con materiales peligrosos son bastante particulares, pues su respuesta debe ser mucho más metódica y más pausada, pues va a depender del tipo y cantidad de material expuesto y los daños potenciales que puede provocar.
“En un incendio, por ejemplo, hay una premura en atender la emergencia, en recabar la información de manera rápida y salvaguardar vidas”, señaló Toribio.
Otra particularidad de estas emergencias es que los especialistas que las atienden deben estar en constante entrenamiento, pues se requiere que cuenten con las mejores condiciones físicas y mentales, por eso uno de los fines de la simulación es medir esos estados.
